In-depth analysis
The Alpinestars SP-8 V3 is the entry point into Alpinestars’ gauntlet glove range, and it punches above its weight in several important areas. The most notable is the material: where most gloves at this price use bovine leather or heavy synthetic construction, the SP-8 V3 uses full-grain goatskin as the primary material across the entire chassis. Motorcycle Gear Hub confirmed this in their detailed review, noting it is commendable for sport-riding gloves at this price point. Goatskin is lighter, more supple, and more abrasion-resistant than standard cow leather, and its presence here is a genuine quality signal.
The knuckle protection system is derived directly from Alpinestars’ MotoGP gear. The SP dual-density knuckle protector uses a hard outer shell over a softer impact-absorbing inner layer, which handles both high-energy impacts and smaller repeated knocks more effectively than a single-density alternative. Temper-foam padding runs across all fingers except the pinkies, providing additional impact absorption across the back of the hand.
The extended gauntlet cuff is one of the most practical features at this price point. WebBikeWorld noted the cuff entry is wide enough to accommodate a chunky sports watch, which makes daily use straightforward. The two-step hook and loop closure at the wrist and cuff allows a secure, adjustable fit, and the pre-curved anatomical finger design reduces hand fatigue on longer rides.
Alpinestars’ patented third and fourth finger bridge is a feature usually found on more expensive models. It prevents the fingers from separating in a crash, which significantly reduces the risk of individual finger injuries. Its inclusion at this price adds genuine safety value that is easy to overlook but meaningful in an impact.
Ventilation is the main limitation. The perforation level is moderate, and in hot conditions above 30 degrees the gloves retain heat noticeably. Kings Motorcycle Gear, who tested the gloves extensively across varying conditions, recommended them for dry conditions but noted they are not suited to wet weather due to the lack of a waterproof membrane. For riders in warm climates who ride primarily in summer, the ventilation is adequate for moving road speeds but becomes warm in urban traffic.
Sizing runs true according to most testers. WebBikeWorld advised against sizing up and noted that while a larger size would give slightly more room in the middle finger, it compromises the overall hand fit. The Alpinestars sizing guide is reliable for this model.
SP-8 V3 vs SP-8 V3 Air:
Alpinestars also offers the SP-8 V3 Air variant, which adds extensive mesh panels and perforations for significantly better airflow. If you ride regularly in warm climates or during summer, the Air version is worth the small additional cost. The standard V3 is the better choice for cooler conditions or riders who prioritise a cleaner leather look.
GEAR4MOTO VERDICT
The Alpinestars SP-8 V3 delivers genuine racing DNA at a price most riders can justify. The full goatskin construction, MotoGP-derived knuckle protection, and finger bridge system offer more than you would expect for under 80 euros. The absence of hard palm armor and the moderate ventilation are real limitations, but neither is unusual at this price point. For sport and street riders who want a quality gauntlet glove from a trusted brand without spending over 100 euros, the SP-8 V3 is one of the strongest options available in 2026. Riders in warm climates should consider the Air variant for better heat management.
